In fact, applying a sealant to cedar is generally not recommended, due to the natural oils in the wood.

Iron fencing can be pricier than other traditional options, such as chain link and wood. This is an investment well worth making for individuals who want fences that look both nice and will last for many years.
Individuals should also keep in mind that iron fencing does require space between bars, so they are not the best options for privacy fencing. Those looking solely for security, though, should look to iron, as it is easy to adapt access control systems to work with these fences.

Fence maintenance, repair and replacement can be a major (and on-going) expense for individual homeowners and large projects like Common Interest Developments, Homeowners Associations and Commercial Developments. In the last 15 years, vinyl fencing (otherwise known as pvc fence) has become an increasingly popular long-term solution to normal wood fence problems.
Since vinyl fencing is U.V. protected it never needs to be painted. The color goes all the way through the material so scratches or gouges are almost invisible. The posts are made of 100% virgin vinyl and will never rot, shrink, decompose or rust like a wood or iron fence post. Although wood and iron fencing may initially cost less than vinyl, that advantage is soon lost because of painting, repair, maintenance and replacement.
Because most vinyl fence manufacturers offer a lifetime warranty, after installation there is little to be done except maybe rinse it off once in a while (usually Mother Nature takes care of this!).
